The task of men
Handwritten note in my blue cover “diary” on the 13th of January 1985
I transcribe literally…going on. But I mean to talk about an idea that has come to me clearly of late:
Now I know what is men´s task for the foreseeable future, the next step in its journey as a natural collective, as a group of animal-men, of men, of the only thing we objectively are.
We are a part of this world, the most qualified to act as Noahs. Namely, our job, until we manage to achieve it, is to shuttle everybody to another planet before this one, Earth, becomes unable to sustain life any longer.
Our job then, our essential compulsory occupation, is to look for another “earth” where life (our life) may continue. It´s quite clear that is our categorical imperative as a species. It might not come true in the next thousand years, but that´s a short time span as long as our planet doesn’t get destroyed. It doesn´t look like is going to happen through “natural” causes.
We then have two obligations ensuing from the one I´ve already mentioned:
1º. – To try and transfer life, the more the better, to a younger planet before our own becomes unliveable for our species (even though it might still be capable of sustaining other life forms). Our duty as mankind is to save, at the very least, our species, and as much of our environment as we possibly can.
2º. – To keep Earth hospitable until we manage the latter.
This, to me, is a clear, sheer idea, natural and divine at the same time (whether God exists or we have to make it so).
Segundo tema (dudoso):
It´s less clear if, apart from trying to survive the Earth, Man has to attempt to be better “per se”. And I don’t mean better because it contributes to the survival of the species, but because it´s in his “nature” (or in the Other´s)
Another problem that arises is God. And it doesn’t resolve itself with the initial idea of having to try and seek the survival of the species.
Therefore there´s, clearly, two theories on God:
- a) A pre-existing God that “pulls” on us so we get closer to Him. And so, many theories can be drawn about whatever He does with the death or soon to be.
- b) A god not done but in the making (the thirty birds of the Chinese legend). In this case that “nongod-nature” would also pull on us to keep making him for eternity. And this would be a road to God. Not the one being, but the one to be.
Both instances can have angels and intermediate gods in the cosmos (up in heaven) that would make “supermen” or more advanced entities than us with whom interactions could be made, or not. If we´ve ever had them, or have now, it might be that “They” are so powerful and alien to us as to seem gods or God (ant-man kid of relationship).
The contents of these pages require further and deeper thought and development and I don’t know if ill ever have the time to do so, but it´s man´s substantiation. He is, as far as we know, the only entity alive capable of outmanoeuvre Earth. “Nature” is smarter that it looked. It doesn’t make a planet to exhaust itself. It doesn´t provide seemingly endless varieties of life forms for nothing. It would seem like it tries up until a “bug”, man, appears that is able to successfully overcome its doomed habitat. If man can abandon Earth and jump around the cosmos, he can be eternal. If he prospers, not only technically, but morally, he might get to be some kind of god.
¿ Buenos y malos? No parece imposible.
The diary continues with other disquisitions on the subject that no longer affect the vital imperative issue.
